Apple, the company known for pushing technological boundaries, has announced plans to dive into the education market with a new education initiative. The company’s initiative is three-fold: provide a free iBooks 2 app for the downloading of textbooks, offer the iBooks Author app designed for textbook creation and expand the iTunes U platform.
While the apps are free, you’ll need an iPad to fully utilize them and textbooks available through the iBooks 2 app must be purchased. Here are a few additional details you need to know:
The iBooks 2 platform for textbooks is basically an electronic alternative to traditional paper textbooks. Virtual textbooks offered through the application bring enhanced interactivity and useful features including the ability to highlight text, create virtual note cards and take notes. The app is free and many iPad textbooks are available to download for $14.99 or less; much more cost-effective than traditional versions.
Course instructors can use the iBooks Author app to create textbooks including the ability to insert custom Javascript or HTML 5 code into eBooks. The app includes templates to easily create multi-touch books, the option to drag and drop images and video, an easy method of dragging and dropping Word file to add text and more.
iTunes U :
The updated iTunes U platform has transformed into an outlet that allows instructors to combine audio, video and iBooks into full online classes. Students can download the iTunes U app to their iPads to view course materials, receive updates from instructors and even to register for classes. The app’s sections include ‘info’, ‘posts’, ‘notes’ and ‘materials’.
Apple’s new education initiative is designed to lower textbooks costs and offer increased educational access. From full online courses to enhanced course interactivity, Apple has taken the first leap to forever change the educational structure.
